George Gershwin
1898-1937 · Modernismen
George Gershwin hette egentligen Jacob Gershowitz och är en udda fågel här eftersom han i huvudsak komponerade populärmusik, musikaler och schlagerdängor. Men han gjorde några ambitiösa och därtill lyckade försök inom den klassiska musiken. Dessutom beundrades han av Rachmaninov och Schönberg. Bara en sån sak.
Efter att 1924 ha komponerat sitt första seriösa verk, Rhapsody in Blue, möttes Gershwin av beundran världen över. Uppenbarligen fick han blodad tand och komponerade därefter populärmusik och seriös musik parallellt.
Sålunda följde att han 1925 skrev det seriösa konsertverket Pianokonsert i F-dur, 1927 musikalen Funny Face, 1928 seriösa An American in Paris, 1930 musikalen Girl Crazy och slutligen 1935 operan Porgy and Bess. Så höll han på och samtidigt skrev han musik för ett antal filmer, allt innan en hjärntumör tragiskt ryckte bort honom i hans trettionionde levnadsår, på toppen av hans karrär.
Ett verk i 'jazzsymfonisk' stil. I original (1924) för piano och jazzband. Orkestrerad för piano och symfoniorkester (1942) av Ferde Grofé. Vilka som spelar i videon känner jag inte till, men det gör ju inte musiken sämre.

1928. An American in Paris skrevs direkt för symfoniorkester och har beskrivits som en slags 'förstärkt' symfonisk dikt. Den välkända filmen med samma namn från 1951 innehåller ett specialarrangemang av Gershwins original. I videon spelas första halvan av verket, av Berliner Philharmoniker och Simon Rattle.
